The Return of Navajo-Churro Sheep to Loom and Table
A quarter century ago, in the late 1970s, all was not well with the Navajo-Churro sheep and the Canyon Country that had been their home for roughly four centuries…..While many books and articles have discussed the tragic historic declines that this breed suffered between the 1870s and 1970s, few have addressed in detail how and why Navajo-Churro sheep have more recently returned to the weaving loom and dinner table. The following narrative attempts to discern the distinctive qualities of the sheep themselves—and of the people who championed them—which have contributed to a cultural, and to some extent, an economic recovery, despite what once seemed to be insurmountable odds.
