Privacy Policy

Updated March 2023

Slow Food USA (SFUSA) is committed to protecting the privacy of our visitors, members and advocates. We have created this policy to outline the protection and use of personal information collected through our website, social media, direct marketing, special events, membership and fundraising transactions, or other interactions with SFUSA communications or services.

We define personal information as information that can be linked to a specific individual (e.g. name, address, phone number, email address or any other information provided to us by members, visitors or advocates).

How do we use the information gathered when you sign up to receive SFUSA communications or use SFUSA’s online services?

SFUSA gathers contact information when you register for email communications at slowfoodusa.org; contribute to SFUSA online, by mail, or on the telephone; when you participate in an event; or contact SFUSA. We use this information to send SFUSA and policy-related action alerts, event invitations, updates, press releases as well as information about SFUSA’s programmatic accomplishments and initiatives, volunteer opportunities, memberships and renewal appeals.

SFUSA collects information from our supporters, volunteers, and donors, including information from the internet, as well as through oral, written, or electronic communications. SFUSA ensures that information about donations will be handled with respect and confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

SFUSA collects and maintains donor information that is voluntarily provided to us, such as: 1) name, address, telephone number and email address; gift giving information (including payment information); 2) information on events attended, publications received and special requests for information related to SFUSA or its programs; and 3) information provided in the form of comments and suggestions. Payment information is used only for donation or payment processing and is not retained for other purposes.

SFUSA uses this information to provide our donors, volunteers, and supporters with better service and with information about SFUSA hosted events and support or volunteer opportunities. All SFUSA donors are entitled to information about the organization’s mission, the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

SFUSA also gathers aggregate information about website usage. Our web server automatically records the domain name and Internet Protocol (IP) address of each visitor to our site. We collect and analyze this information, which helps us determine which pages are most frequently visited, to improve the site and its resources for our visitors. SFUSA does not track individual usage of our website.

What anonymous information is collected on this site?

Anonymous clickstream information is collected from every visitor to this site. This includes pages viewed, date and time, and browser type. IP numbers are used to determine domain type and, in some cases, geographic region.

Does this site use cookies?

SFUSA uses remote data structures (“cookies”) and monitors users’ Internet protocol (IP) addresses to operate the interactive sections of this website (those that require member registration and sign-in). Cookies contain anonymous information only and are never used to retrieve any information about your identity. SFUSA uses these functions exclusively for identification and internal evaluative purposes, and does not share any information thereby collected with third parties.

The website contains links to external sites with their own data collection and privacy policies. Please note that when you click on one of these links, you are entering another site. We encourage you to read the privacy statements of these linked sites as their privacy policy may differ from ours. SFUSA is not responsible or liable for information submitted to these sites or use of that information.

Children under 13

The website is not intended for use by unsupervised children under the age of 13. SFUSA does not solicit or collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you are a child under the age of 13, please get the permission of a parent or guardian before submitting any personal information.

How your information is protected

SFUSA holds your personal information to the highest level of confidence and security. Our website is securely protected against the loss, theft, misuse or misrepresentation of information under our control. Access to SFUSA’s database information is limited only to specific qualified SFUSA employees. Additionally, when you make a contribution to SFUSA online, your financial information is transmitted using a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. SSL is a proven coding system that lets your browser encrypt, or scramble, data before being sent to our payment processor.

Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet can ever be 100% secure. While we strive to fully protect your information, we cannot ensure or completely guarantee the security of such information.

We take the utmost precaution to keep your credit card information safe and secure. But if you are uncomfortable submitting your credit card information online, contact our development representative at membership@slowfoodusa.org.

Acceptance of Constituent Privacy Policy

To further our mission and better serve our constituents, SFUSA is continually improving and adding new functionality and features to our website and improving and adding to its existing services and programs. Because of these ongoing changes and the changing nature of technology, SFUSA’s information practices will change from time to time.

If and when its information practices change, SFUSA will post the policy changes to its website to notify its constituents of the changes and, where appropriate and practical, give them the opportunity to “opt out” of the new programs and practices. If you are concerned about how your personal information is used, please check back at the SFUSA site frequently or contact comms@slowfoodusa.org.
