You may recall that last week we were musing about what happens when good small business sell themselves to big ones, and when fast food adheres to slow principles. We just came across this article in the L.A. Times from last month, which explores the inherent contradictions in a store that promotes sustainable food and green living being gigantically big and using a massive amount of electricity. Isn't there a place, even in Pasadena– the land of urban sprawl– for something slower? Smaller?

I’m not a big Whole Foods fan, but I do know that in my town (about 30 miles east of Pasadena) we have no less than 4 farmstands in about a five mile radius and a local butcher just a few blocks from my home. I would be willing to bet that my community is not that unique in Southern California. There is plenty of local and seasonal food out there if you look in our communities. I don’t understand the need to go to Whole foods to support local and sustainable agriculture. I’d be willing to bet my local farmstand is a lot cheaper, too.
