As many of you know, the Slow Food USA national office is located in Brooklyn, NY near an area hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. We are thankful to those who reached out to us. Our staff and office headquarters are all fine, but the damage to our neighboring communities is palpable.
The human response has been inspiring in our area. People have opened their homes to those in need of lodging and community groups have been organizing to deliver food, clothing and resources to those who need it most. Still, there is more to do and far too many people will be displaced for months to come.
Below is a list of resources we hope is helpful to have in one place. If you have additional suggestions, please post in the comment thread for others to see.

I wanted to let you know about an organization that you might not be aware of…YouGiveGoods.com.
Simply put, YouGiveGoods is a website where anyone (individual, organization, company, etc.) can set up an online food drive page. They then share that web address (URL) through email and social media with family, friends, colleagues and more, driving people to their drive page. Visitors can literally buy food right there online. They receive a tax receipt via email (which you don’t normally get when donating food). At the end of the drive YouGiveGoods delivers all the food to the designated recipient (food pantry/bank, soup kitchen) for you. It’s that simple.
No geographic limitations or logistical limitations! You can be anywhere in the country running an online food drive nationally for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, raise and deliver tons of food to the pantry of your choice without the heavy lift and everyone can watch in real time on the drive page.
Sometimes, in situations like disaster relief, people are reluctant to give monetary donations and giving a physical donation is too difficult. YouGiveGoods has an answer for those people.
You can go to http://www.YouGiveGoods.com and Search the word “Sandy” and review a list of over 150 drives (and counting) being done right now to support Hurricane hit areas. The Salvation Army is running 26 drives on our site for Hurricane Relief.
Warmest regards,
Michael Connell

Hello,
I’ve been trying to find a reputable charity or donation center where I can have non-perishable foods shipped to New York this holiday season for those displaced from the storm. Is there any chance you may have any resources down in the South Florida region, so that I could ensure that the collections get to you guys up North? Please advise. Thank you!
