Nearly 1,000 Portlanders (and some out-of-towners) came out on Labor Day to show their support for Slow Food and school lunch reform. The clouds broke just before 12:30 and drops of rain fell right at 4:00, as if on cue. Attendees shared wood-fired flatbreads and local pickles, as well as home-cooked meals, amidst volunteer-grown edibles and children playing parachute. Hundreds signed the Time for Lunch petition, and learned from local child nutrition advocates such as Ecotrust Food & Farms, Oregon Environmental Council, Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services, Growing Gardens, and Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force. All enjoyed the community feel of the event. Thanks to Portland Institute for Contemporary Art for co-hosting this Eat-in in conjunction with its annual Time-Based Art Festival.
