We organized a “Seniors for Kids” potluck/picnic at Burbank Heights & Orchards, senior apartments, in Sebastopol, CA. Thirty folks showed up, including Susan Campbell from Slow Food Russian River. We are continuing to fill up petitions and circulate forms to grow the numbers and encourage donations.

Susan explained the history of the Slow Food movement, begun in Italy when McDonald’s wanted to put a business at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome. It is now an international organization, promoting healthy (no pesticides, herbicides, GMO’s, etc.), seasonal, locally grown food, using the principles of environmental sustainability and social justice for the farmers and farmworkers.

Susan pointed out that school lunches should emphasize fresh, nutritious foods as a way to help reverse the trend of increasingly overweight or obese and diabetic children. In order to have a stronger voice in Congress, Slow Food is growing it’s membership with a special membership offer through the month of September. “Give More if You Can, Less if You Can’t” allows a one year membership for any size donation to Slow Food.
