Development Associate

Position Description:

Slow Food USA seeks a motivated, energetic Development Associate to join and support our efforts to increase the number of donors giving to Slow Food USA and the size of our prospect pool. We have ambitious fundraising plans for the next three years, and the ideal candidate will join the office with both an acute attention to detail and an insatiable enthusiasm for our work. The Development Associate will act as the point of contact for much of Slow Food USA's donor relations, while simultaneously providing support to the development office through major donor stewardship and membership giving campaigns. A critical part of this work entails managing Slow Food USA's fundraising database, including maintaining records, providing reports and generating lists of donors for cultivation events, stewardship activities and solicitations. Specific job duties are outlined below, but given the small size and collaborative nature of our organization, the ideal candidate will be excited about participating in all areas of development as needs warrant.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience using CRM databases; knowledge of fundraising databases and Convio's Common Ground software preferred.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to the Slow Food's mission and specific interest in development.
  • Experience crafting persuasive communications preferred.

Specific job duties for the Slow Food USA Development Associate include:

  • Maintain organized, up-to-date donor files, including updating electronic and paper donor records with prospect information and contact reports.
  • Manage Slow Food USA fundraising database and membership services vendors on issues related to database and solicitations.
  • Manage all direct mail income processing.
  • Support major gift cultivation and solicitation efforts, including drafting gift acknowledgements, designing quarterly stewardship materials and tracking all major gift activity in the database.
  • Implement membership solicitation and stewardship activities, including generating reports and solicitation lists.
  • Assist in the coordination of special events for donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Other job-related duties as necessary.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and characteristics:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Flexibility and sense of humor are both very important traits for this role.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills, including ability to develop productive relationships with stakeholders and colleagues across a diverse array of backgrounds and geographies.
  • Polished, professional demeanor and excellent customer service skills, including a communication style that diffuses conflict and promotes cooperation.
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail and follow through with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to use technology to achieve fundraising goals, including experience with complex databases. Common Ground fundraising database experience preferred.
  • Ability to act independently and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively and keep composure under pressure.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends when needed.
  • Strong skill set in working with Microsoft Excel.

Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt Employee

Compensation: $35,000, benefits included

Slow Food USA Internships

Slow Food USA offers internships year-round to current undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates. The internships follow three cycles: Fall, Spring and Summer, located in the national office in Brooklyn, NY. Start and end dates are flexible, although typically our Fall internships begin in September, our Spring internships begin in January, and Summer internships in June. A minimum 15 hours per week is required for all cycles. Fall and Spring internships also require a minimum duration of three months. Internships are unpaid; however, students may earn academic credit. Any available internships are listed below.
