Urban Harvest is Slow Food USA's festive tribute to the farmers,
artisans,
and chefs who are changing the way food is grown, produced,
and consumed in
New York City and the region. Come join us as we honor the
craftsmanship and
dedication required to provide us with foods that are delicious,
ecologically sustainable, and humanely produced.
NEW AMSTERDAM MARKET

Before New York there was New Amsterdam, whose domain - the
New Netherlands
- included not only what became New York State, but also New
Jersey,
Vermont, and western Massachusetts and Connecticut. The market,
held in a
magnificent Beaux-Arts portico designed by McKim, Mead, and
White, will
feature artisanal cheeses, wines, pickles and preserves, heirloom
apples and
hand crafted ciders, grass- fed meats, pastured poultry and
more from the
far corners of New Amsterdam's former hinterlands. Market
vendors and NYC
chefs will also sell tasting plates made with seasonal, regional
ingredients.
The marketplace will be free and open to the public. Special

Fun!
At Spirits of the Region, Slow Food USA and the Institute
of Culinary Education will present some of the finest handcrafted
beverages available in today's New Netherlands during a three-floor,
walk around tasting - a full floor each of Long Island wine,
New World microbrews, and artisanal hard apple cider. For
just one $55 ticket ($65 for non-members), you will have the
privilege of experiencing all of these traditional beverages,
poured by producers who have traveled from as far away as
Vermont and New Hampshire, some of whom will be in New York
for their first tasting event! Click

Special Workshops and Kids' Tastings
2 PM - Brewing Traditions in the New
Netherlands; 3 PM - The Apple Cider Comeback; 4 PM - Long
Island Wines - Past, Present, and Future
Informal workshops of the cultural and historical significance
of beer,
wine, and cider production in the region will take place throughout
the
afternoon. Discussions will be led by producers and enthusiasts,
and will be
accompanied by a few fine examples of these traditional beverages.
Kids' shrub tastings at 2 PM, 3 PM,
and 4 PM
Shrub is a vinegar-based fruit syrup made by Slow Food member
Kim Tait in
Pennsylvania. Kids will have a chance to sample the fruits
that make shrub,
then evaluate the taste and smell of six different flavors
before choosing
their favorite for a sparkling, homemade soda pop!
