Terra Madre 2006
A World Meeting of Food Communities
5,000 sustainable food producers, chefs, and university representatives from over 150 countries

October 26-30, 2006
Turin, Italy

“A food community is a physically identifiable entity, that shares values, interests and a common purpose, and is engaged—through seed saving, harvesting, breeding, farming, fishing, food processing, food distribution, marketing, education and other eco-gastronomic activities—in bringing small scale food products to consumers.” -Carlo Petrini, Slow Food Founder and President

In October 2004, Slow Food held the first edition of Terra Madre, a forum
for those who seek to grow, raise, catch, create, distribute and promote
food in ways that respect the environment, defend human dignity and protect the health of consumers.

The gathering provided an unprecedented opportunity for dialogue and
exchange between the land stewards and food artisans of our international sustainable food network.

The second edition of Terra Madre will expand and reinforce this network by introducing a number of new food communities‹as well as delegations of cooks, academics, and researchers ‹who are interested in the production and consumption of food that is good, clean and fair, and who believe in supporting food communities that produce quality food. Slow Food believes that only through interdependence‹between food producers, chefs and academics‹will a global sustainable food network thrive. It is with this understanding that we bring together those who are: directly involved in food production and who are the guardians of traditional wisdom and knowledge; cooks who seek out quality products of the land and who process them with empirical experience; and academics whose effort defends, strengthens and expands our collective work.

Workshops, farm stays, and shared meals provide occasion to discuss methods of production, marketing, and processing. All Terra Madre delegates will also have the opportunity to attend Slow Food's Salone del Gusto, the world's largest marketplace of artisanal food products, which will be held concurrently.

Whether you plan to nominate yourself, your food community, or someone you know to attend, all are encouraged to apply.
